The Lankan Lions have defeated the Australians after 30 long years in an ODI series. Currently, the series stands at 3-1 in the favor of the hosts Sri Lanka who have an invincible lead.
Australian captain Aaron Finch won the toss and elected to field first at the R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo. After being put in to bat Sri Lanka lost 3 wickets in the powerplay, Niroshan Dickwella, Pathum Nissanka, and Kusal Mendis were the ones who fell early.
Then the duo of Dhananjaya De Silva and Charith Asalanka steadied the drowning innings. Both carried on at a near about strike rate of 100 and put up a 100-plus partnership.
Dhananjaya perished to Marsh after a well-made 60 off 61 deliveries. However, Asalanka went on to score a century, the first in his career to take Sri Lanka north of 250. The inning was well-timed, crucial, and calculative, it included 10 fours and a six. Sri Lanka posted 258 on board after they got bowled out in the 49th over.
Matthew Kuhnemann, Pat Cummins, and Marsh got 2 wickets each. Maxwell dismissed Dickwella while Hazlewood and Cameron Geen remained wicketless. Labuschagne bowled 2 overs none for 13.
259 was not that big a target but can be very tricky on occasions. Aussies had a bad start as they lost their captain Finch in the 3rd over for a duck. Warner and Marsh stitched a quick partnership of 63 off 54 balls as Australia looked in complete control.
However, as Marsh got out Australia kept losing wickets at regular intervals allowing Sri Lanka to come back into the game. Warner stood at one end while Labuschagne(14), Carey(19), Head (27), and Maxwell(1) all departed cheaply.
Warner was unlucky and got stumped on 99 on Dhananjaya De Silva’s ball. Warner’s innings comprised 12 boundaries all fours.
However, Australia was still in the game as Pat Cummins’ 35 runs contribution took the game deep, but wasn’t enough to win them the game as he missed a straight delivery of Chamika Karunaratne and got struck on the pads to be dismissed on 35 with 19 still required to win. Australia got bowled out for 254 and Sri Lanka triumphed courtesy of some great bowling. Chamika, Vandersay, and De Silva picked 2 wickets each, and 4 other bowlers contributed with 1 wicket each.
Australia won the first ODI comfortably and it seemed Australia will take the series without much hassle. Well, it was not to be as Sri Lanka had some other ideas, and oh boy! They staged an incredible comeback winning 3 on the bounce against a really strong Australian team to take an invincible lead in the series.
Sri Lanka has been rebuilding for quite some time and it looks like they have found a great bunch of youngsters who are looking ready for the International stage.
Kusal Mendis, Pathum Nissanka, and Charith Asalanka have been the stars with the bat while Dhananjaya De Silva has showcased his all-round abilities picking 5 wickets in the series so far and playing important knocks with the bat. The bowling department has performed as a whole unit with Hasranga, Theekshana, Vandersay, and Dunith Wellalage all doing well.

The scenes at R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo were incredible as the Island nation rejoiced in the victory of Sri Lanka over Australia. The nation has been suffering economically with fuel shortages, power cuts, and ultra-high inflation though this all did not stop them to come to support their National team. The team and players also did not disappoint as they defeated Australia in a packed house.
This was all from Sri Lanka vs Australia’s 4th ODI, now Australia is under the scanner and would look to at least win 2 games in the series. Sri Lanka has won the series already and would want to finish on a high.
