Mayank will be joining the Indian Test squad in Edgbaston as a standby player for the Test match beginning this Friday.
As Rohit Sharma has tested positive for covid-19 his participation in the 5th Test is in jeopardy. Indian team has however not ruled Rohit out of the contest and is handling the situation by following a wait and watch approach. Rohit is currently in isolation and recovering well.
India has not made any announcement on captaincy change and will make the decision closer to the match day. However, Jasprit Bumrah was seen captaining on day 4 of the warm-up game for Leicestershire.
KL Rahul who got injured just before the South Africa series is currently unavailable and traveled to Germany for surgery.
KL’s best friend Mayank however has been a regular in the Indian Test team before being left out of this test. Mayank has done really well in the past in both away and home tests. However, his recent form is a concern. He just couldn’t get going in the IPL 2022 for Punjab Kings. He played his last test against Sri Lanka in March where he managed to score 4 and 22 in his 2 innings.
Mayank will be available from the start and would not be required to quarantine. In the absence of Rohit, Mayank might get to open alongside Shubman Gill.
India is currently ahead in the series by 2-1 and if they win or manage to draw the 5th Test, it will be a historic series win.
