Batting first at Lord’s, India lost the wicket of Sunil Gavaskar very early in the innings. India was 5/1 when Mohinder ‘Jimmy’ Amarnath walked up to the crease. Mohinder Amarnath and Kris Srikkanth built a crucial 50-run partnership, with Kris Srikkanth being the aggressive partner. Sandeep Patil’s (27 off 29) and Kapil Dev’s (15 off 8) quick-fire cameos got the scoreboard ticking. However, they also got out and failed to convert their starts. Kirti Azad and Roger Binny were quickly snapped up by Andy Roberts for scores of 0 and 2 respectively. With small but important contributions from Madan Lal(17), Syed Kirmani(14), and Balwinder Sandhu(11), India reached 183.

Defending 183

Most of the teams in the world would have given up the match after scoring just 183 runs on the board. But this team believed. They made a decision to fight for every single run.

Balwinder Sandhu drew the first blood for India removing Gordon Greenidge for just 1. However, a partnership started brewing between Vivian Richards and Desmond Haynes, and it was Madan Lal who jolted the Windies batting with his triple strike. He first removed Desmond Haynes for 13, followed by Vivian Richards for 33 and Larry Gomes for 5. The West Indian captain, Clive Lloyd, also followed suit and departed for just 8 runs becoming the 1st wicket of Roger Binny. From 50 for 1, West Indies was reduced to 66 for 5 in a matter of overs. Next was Faoud Bacchus, gone for just 8 runs, bowled by Sandhu and caught by Kirmani.

West Indian wicket-keeper Jeff Dujon batted for 94 minutes and stitched a partnership with Malcolm Marshall, in his effort to rescue the drowning West Indian innings. However, he could only do it till 52 overs as he was dismissed for 25 by Amarnath and Malcolm Marshall(18), Andy Roberts (4) and Joel Garner(5) followed suit. Mohinder Amarnath took 3 quick wickets and Kapil Dev also got 1 wicket. 1983 final scorecard showcased West Indies all out for 140 in 52 overs and that was it, India did it!
